What are the benefits of extruded aluminium?
Aluminium extrusion is a process which involves heating a ‘billet’ to temperatures over 500 degrees Celsius, whilst the metal is still hot the billet is forced through a steel die. The aluminium enters as a solid piece but then exits as a ‘profile’. We design our products from scratch, therefore we have full control of the profiles and we do this to guarantee your satisfaction. Aluminium profiles are created through a relatively simple process. There are many benefits to using extruded aluminium over other materials including;
Lightweight and strong
The process of aluminium extrusion naturally imbues the profile with an integral strength, building on aluminium’s raw properties of having a high strength to weight ratio. Extruded aluminium is particularly hardy, making it a perfect material for cold- weather environments. A property made even stronger when the anodisation process is applied.
Non corrosive
Aluminium contains its own naturally occurring oxide film, which gives it a resilience to rust and corrosion. This makes using extruded aluminium perfect for any external building applications, and far more efficient to use rather than other building materials that are corrosive, such as steel.
Recyclable
Because aluminium retains a high scrap value, it is essentially indefinitely recyclable without losing any of its superior characteristics.
Resilient and hard wearing
Aluminium is a very strong and flexible material, and able to withstand lots of pressure.This allows the aluminium to bend when it needs to or spring back from the shock of impact, making it reliable to use in a variety of different environments, and applications.
What is anodised aluminium?
When aluminium is in its natural state it has a thin naturally occurring oxide layer. This makes aluminium more hardwearing than other popular building materials, such as iron or steel. However, this oxide layer is not as reliable as anodising the aluminium. Anodisation is an ‘electrochemical’ process which will give the aluminium corrosion resistance that is incomparable to other metals. In comparison metals such as steel and iron would have to use a substrate rather than anodisation. A substrate also strengthens the metal though is only a surface level strengthening, which usually is a coat of paint or powder.
In summary, there are many benefits to using extruded aluminium over other building materials including
increased strength,resistance and longevity.
