Why use extruded aluminium?
The process of extrusion involves using a block of metal or ‘billet’ which is forced through a die under high pressure. The die opening dictates the profile of the extrusion and can be a vast range of shapes. Here is a guide on some of the benefits of using extruded aluminium.
- High production quality
Extrusion moulding can improve the internal structure of the aluminum. Extruded products have high dimensional accuracy and good surface quality compared to processes such as rolling, forging and other methods.
- Lightweight
Extruded aluminium is perfect for moving objects. It’s almost one third of the weight of steel which makes the aluminium cheaper and easier to transport in comparison to other materials.
- Very strong
Extruded aluminium has a great strength to weight ratio, especially when compared to other comparative building products, which makes it very efficient in a variety of different environments.
- Anodisation
Aluminium oxide is a natural protective film that sits over the metals surface, protecting aluminium from the oxidation process. Extruded aluminium has the ability to be anodised – improving aluminium’s rust resilience. Anodisation is an electro-chemical process which thickens the naturally occurring aluminium oxide layer, providing the aluminium with greater resistance than it originally had.
