The resilience of anodised aluminium
In its natural form aluminium is a very strong and lightweight material. Paralleling the performance of steel and iron. When customizing steel to make it more resilient to corrosion you need to add a coating or protection to the material, making the building material last significantly longer than it would naturally. Aluminium on the other hand has a process that is far more efficient than coating or painting.
Aluminium has a natural oxide layer which allows the material to be very strong and resistant to rust, forming part of the substrate of the material rather than a coating. Anodisation is an electro-chemical process which thickens this layer further, making aluminium significantly more resilient than it was in its initial state. Here are some of the reasons why anodised aluminium is better to use than other coated building materials:
- Anodising is self-repairing
Anodised aluminium is self repairing from scratches and cut surfaces, they will ‘heal’ naturally this results in low maintenance costs. Unlike coatings, anodisation won’t flake, chip or peel over time.
- Painted materials require further processing before they can be recycled.
Anodised aluminium is 100% recyclable because there is no coating, the added protection of anodisation only thickens the oxide layer that forms part of the material’s substrate. When adding paint or a coating to a metal, it adds another ‘foreign’ layer. This extra layer must be removed before the recycling process.
- Coated materials are guaranteed to fade
With protective coatings usually being paint based, the pigments in the paint will naturally fade over time. This is not an issue with anodised aluminium because anodisation is an electro- chemical process which is applied to the material internally. Because of this, the colour is maintained for years to come with very little maintenance.
- Anodised surfaces are impermeable
Anodised surfaces are totally impermeable which means that no liquid can pass through the surface. This is an excellent quality for external settings whether industrial, domestic or otherwise.
- Resistant to abrasion
Aluminium oxide is a very hard compound, second only to diamond according to the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. This illustrates how anodised aluminium surfaces have superior scratch and abrasion resistance when compared to coated surfaces.
Anodised aluminium is far more efficient than using a painted or coated building material, whilst aluminium extrusions have a far superior strength to weight ratio than industry alternatives.
